For this custom basement design in Great Falls, Virginia, we transformed an underutilized lower level into a moody, sophisticated retreat that balances luxury, personality, and function. Our clients, who were also former wedding clients, envisioned a darker, more intimate atmosphere, so we leaned into rich finishes, layered textures, and architectural detail throughout the space. In the bar area, we intentionally lowered the ceiling to incorporate an existing bulkhead into the design, then added traditional molding and an arched architectural treatment to create the feeling of an intimate speakeasy. Subtle equestrian-inspired details nod to the client’s love of horses, while mixed metals, velvet counter stools, and thoughtful pops of color keep the palette collected and dynamic. A nearby seating area pairs a low-profile black leather sofa with a ribbed round coffee table, an arched display cabinet, and a leather lounge arrangement grounded by a hide rug and punctuated by a sculptural copper floor lamp. Continuing through the basement, curated artwork lines the hallway leading into a custom home gym, where fluted wood paneling was designed to discreetly conceal utility and electrical access while also helping manage sound transmission to the rest of the home. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors, durable rubber flooring, and integrated architectural details make the gym as polished as it is practical. The result is a highly personalized Great Falls basement renovation that feels warm, dramatic, and intentionally designed for both entertaining and everyday living.
